How to photograph a meal for KidEat

Good light, the full plate in frame and one meal per photo help KidEat identify foods more accurately.

Before sending

Five simple steps

1

Use good light

Place the plate near a window or use even lighting. Avoid harsh shadows and glare.

2

Keep the camera steady

Shoot from above or at a slight angle and check that the image is sharp.

3

Show the whole plate

Do not crop the edges of the plate, cup or individual foods. This helps with food and portion estimates.

4

One meal per photo

Keep dishes from the same meal together. Send photos of separate meals one at a time.

5

Add a short note when needed

If the ingredients of a casserole, soup or sauce are not visible, describe them in a message.

What makes recognition harder

When to retake the photo

  • The photo is dark, blurry or has strong glare.
  • Food is covered by packaging, a hand or other objects.
  • Several unrelated plates appear in one frame.
  • The dish is too far away or partly cropped.
If the photo is unclearRetake it or describe the meal in text

Send another photo or write the foods in an ordinary message. When KidEat is uncertain, a clarification is better than a guess.
